Historical background

The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the University of Dar es Salaam Tanzania, has been organizing the biannual International Conference on Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) for the last 22 years. The conferences have covered various discourses on the role of Mechanical, Industrial and other related engineering disciplines towards innovation and sustainable development. This year, the 8 th MIE Conference, which is expected to be held on 24th and 25th October, 2024 at The Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology (NM-AIST)., Arusha Tanzania will focus on promoting strong linkage between academia and industries to enhance industrial productivity and competitiveness. This is a topical concern both nationally and internationally.

The above are in line with UDSM Institutional Vision 2061 and the Five Year Development Plan (2021 – 2025/26) which aim at fulfilling the nation’s aspirations towards industrialization and maximum use of her human resources, natural resources and realignment of priorities by the Tanzania Development Vision (TDV). More less the same is also in line with African Union Vision 2063 (The Africa we want) and United Nation (UN) Agenda 2030 that emphasize member countries to build sustainable and resilient infrastructure, enhance scientific research and upgrade technological capabilities on industrial sector, foster innovation and promote inclusive sustainable industrialization (UN Goal No. 8 and 9).

Objective

The conference's primary goal is to disseminate current research findings, innovative ideas, and practical industrial experiences, as well as discuss how private industry, regional engineers, and academic institutions may work together to accelerate industrialization and, by extension, the country's economic and social development.
